Run for a better world
2-hour runs – a success story
In the middle of the eighties, Horyzon brought the concept of a 2-hour run from the USA to Switzerland. The first run was held in Frauenfeld in October 1986 with 200 runners and proceeds of CHF 62'000. Since then, 145 sponsored races have been held in 23 different places. The races were organised by volunteers and the proceeds went to development projects organised by Horyzon. A total of 28'000 runners have run 413’000 kilometres and total proceeds have exceeded 7 million Swiss francs!
Local committees are responsible for carrying out these races. Runners obtain as many sponsors as possible before the race (friends, family, companies etc) who pledge a certain amount per kilometre run within 2 hours. The amount of kilometres run is then multiplied by the promised amount of money of the various sponsors.
A part of all proceeds go to projects organised by Horyzon, another part is often donated to a social project in the respective area.
These proceeds are an important source of finance for Horyzon and provide more than 10% of the funds for financing projects.
